Cathodic Protection of Immersed Structures
Cathodic protection has been successfully used to prevent corrosion of structures immersed in fresh or salt water. Cathodic protection is often used to supplement coatings which have been applied to the structure. In cathodic protection, a very small electrical current flows from an anode to the structure. This current will cause the electric potential of the structure to shift in the negative direction. As this shift occurs, the corrosion reaction slows down and eventually stops. Cathodic protection can prevent corrosion from occurring in the first place and it can stop the corrosion process if it has already begun. Cathodic protection cannot, however, reverse corrosion damage which has already occurred.
Electrochemical Devices, Inc. Products
Electrochemical Devices, Inc. manufactures reference electrodes, impressed current anodes and constant current rectifiers which are used for corrosion prevention by the cathodic protection process.

Reference electrodes designed for full immersion applications such as water storage tanks or waterfront structures comprise our I Series. Portable reference electrodes are also included in the I Series.

EDI designs and manufactures custom corrosion monitoring and prevention products for use in full immersion service. Click on the I Series Selection Guide for a further description of these products.
Featured Product: Transportable Reference Electrode
EDI now produces portable reference electrodes using the same advanced technology used in our permanent reference electrodes. Our Model IT reference electrode is a maintenance free portable reference electrode with many advantages over the old style liquid filled reference electrodes. With a Model IT, it is no longer necessary to disassemble the reference, abrade the copper rod back to bright metal, soak the ceramic plug to remove salt blockages and contamination, and finally renew the solution with de-ionized water and fresh crystals. In addition, the Model IT has:

  • a gelled electrolyte which resists contamination and leakage,
  • antifreeze protection to -30C,
  • a hardwood plug which resists clogging and salt blockage,
  • a 20 year design life.
Get a maintenance-free portable reference electrode from the leader in reference electrode technology, Electrochemical Devices, Inc. EDI Model IT permanent portable reference electrodes are available with either a copper/copper sulfate element for general use or a silver/silver chloride element for marine and concrete use.
